My Birthday Cruise Report – Day 2

June 30, I woke up, went to Starbucks for coffee and had a Luna Bar, then headed to the hotel lobby to wait for Ernesto, my guide from Rainbow Barcelona who was going to lead me on a walking tour “Modernism and Gaudi”.

We looked at several examples – both from Gaudi as well as others…

That one is Casa Batllo. I didn’t go in, but I love the details…

And a walking-speed look at La Pedrera…

Then we looked at other buildings and small details on them…

And then we headed towards the prize of the day…

Sagrada Familia!

It was truly spectacular. These are just a few of my pictures…

I could post a ton more. When I’ve finished the whole trip I’ll link to all my albums on flickr.

I explored Sagrada Familia on my own – including the Nativity Tower (my choice as it’s the one Gaudi worked on) – and then walked back to the hotel to rest for a little before meeting Clara, another guide with Rainbow Barcelona, for a Barcelonetta and Tapas Tour.

Big time kudos to Clara who had to try and find gluten-free options on short notice. We walked around and saw some different things including the 13 geese in the Cathedral Cloister. There are always 13 white geese there because Eulalia, the co-patron saint of Barcelona who was martyred at 13.

We walked around various places along Las Ramblas and ended in a cafe that had some gluten-free pastries. There I got to meet Eloi, who I had done all my pre-trip correspondence with – and he was just as sweet as he seemed over email.

After that, I headed back to the hotel to pack up all but what I needed in the morning (I’d brought 2 checked bags, one of which was not opened until I was on the ship), and then got in bed to try to sleep!!
