I figured I’d try something a little different today – try and give you a little glimpse into who I am besides a runner. 🙂
One of my Team Tough Chik teammates, Katie had five questions she’d been tagged by others on. She didn’t specifically tag anyone in particular other than “if you’re reading this…” so I’m considering myself tagged.
So… Five Things…
1. Something you would not know about me.
This one’s a little tough as there are people from various aspects of my life who read this blog so where to go…
Oh I know.
I think I can probably count on one hand the people who read this who know this one.
Going into 9th grade, I tried out for cheerleading.
Fat as I was, nerdy as I was, as into band as I was, I got it into my head that I wanted to be a cheerleader. My friend Nancy and I went to all the practices and worked and worked to make the squad.
And I was honestly crushed that I hadn’t made the squad, not even the JV squad. A year later, things would all be different and I’d be happy i hadn’t made it, but that day when the list was posted I thought my world was coming to an end.
2. Something you have done that you never thought you would do.
Ok, this one’s really honestly easy. You can probably guess it for yourself if you think even a little.
Think about it…
You can do it…
Run a marathon. As a kid I had asthma – mainly only two attacks per year, and I never had an inhaler. But I did take advantage of it for that doctor’s note so I never had to run the mile in gym (my aforementioned friend Nancy, who did have an inhaler and I just had to walk a half a mile in the same allotted time). And when I found out that two years of Marching Band (which I loved) would replace a year of PE in high school? Oh baby I was all over that one!
And then somehow something clicked in 2010. I worked my way through Jillian Michaels’ 30-Day Shred and in the process “met” Bill and Laura and Kari and others through Twitter. We were all “shredheads”, and they ran as well. They encouraged me to look into Couch to 5K and start running. They encouraged me when I felt discouraged and informed me gently that “you don’t have to run fast, you just have to run”. They’ve continued to encourage me as I’ve trained for and run 4 half marathons and 3 marathons.
And it’s only the beginning!! 🙂
3. What are your favorite things to do?
In no particular order…
* read books
* watch movies
* go to theatre/ballet/opera
* the beach – specifically Ocean Isle Beach, NC
*white water rafting
I don’t get to do them all as much as I’d like, but those are a few of my favorite things. (Sorry, not feeling creative enough right now to set them to the song.)
4. One of your life goals.
Hmm… This feels like a “bucket list” question, and I’m not big on the whole “bucket list” phenomenon. But…
I’d like to travel around the world far more than I have. I love experiencing different cultures and seeing different places. Big on the list are:
* Ireland beyond Dublin
* Italy beyond Florence
* Australia and New Zealand
5. Who is a person that you KNOW (in real life) that you currently admire most.
Absolutely no question on this one.
A.J. is a running club teammate of mine. We’re members of Front Runners New York – a club for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered runners.
And A.J. is trans – FTM (female to male) – meaning when I first met A.J. he was a part of the women’s team. He has since had top surgery and is legally a man now. Being able to be even a small part of A.J.’s journey, I’ve seen so much strength from him. He is truly a remarkable person, and I wish everyone could if not know A.J., could know someone like him.
So there you go… Five things about me.
I think I’m going to go get some water and continue relaxing to the New Age Yoga “station” on songza.
