Making the decision…

It all started back in January. That’s when I got a copy of Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred. I was going pretty well with the workouts for a while, then my family went to Disney World and I got out of the habit. i worked out sporadically until April, when I went to Chicago to visit friends. When I got back, I made a decision.

I was going to get in shape.

So at the beginning of May I put the 30 Day Shred back in the DVD player and set out to do the whole thing. All 30 days of it.

And I did it! Yes, I screamed and cussed at the tv more than once, but I did it!

After that, I wanted more. I got more of Jillian’s DVDs and did those. I got Bob Harper’s new DVD series…and I’m still working my way through all of them. But I’ve pretty much been active at least 6 days a week ever since.

Then in June I heard about the Couch to 5K program. A program designed to teach you to run – gradually and without overworking your muscles or hopefully burning you out. I wasn’t sure about running outside in the heat and humidity – especially when I was first starting out. So I looked into gyms and joined Planet Fitness. I signed up for the Komen Race for the Cure – a 5K “fun run”. So I had a goal. I went to Jack Rabbit Sports and did the whole “run on a treadmill while we tape you” thing to get fitted for the right shoes. I had my shoes.

I went to the gym for my first session and wondered how on earth someone who was a true couch potato could have survived that workout. Granted, I probably pushed it at trying to run 5mph. So I backed off a little and slowly let my body get used to this new running thing. My first real venture outside was when I went to visit my parents. I did better than I thought I would do. Something funny had happened during this process.

I fell in love with running.

Even on the treadmill. I signed up for and ran the 2nd Annual World Trade Center Run to Remember – in a time of 41:36…WITH a pit stop. Not too shabby for a first 5K. I started thinking of myself as a runner.

Now…I’ve known that Disney World has a marathon and a half marathon. I even knew they had a Princess Half Marathon. I looked into the dates for the latter, but since I’ll be in Florence, Italy the week before, I didn’t think it would be smart to try and run a half marathon jetlagged. So I’d set my goal for doing that one in 2012.

And then I got involved with the community at The Shredheads and have virtually met some awesome people – mainly via twitter. Two of them ran the Disneyland Half Marathon last weekend, and since they had run the Princess earlier in the year, they got these cool Coast to Coast Challenge medals. They had great times doing the races, and were really encouraging.

I was still thinking 2012…mostly. But. A little part of me wanted more than a 5K race. A little part of me wanted that half marathon before 2012. And another part of me was intrigued by and wanted that Coast to Coast challenge.

But what to do?

I looked again at the schedule on runDisney and there was Marathon Weekend. They have a Half there. On that Saturday. And that was do-able. I could take a personal day on Friday and fly down, run (ok, honestly run/walk) on Saturday, and fly back on Sunday. It was do-able, at least time wise.

But what about training?

I grabbed my copy of Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield and looked at the training plans they have in the back. There’s one for run/walking a half…and it’s 14 weeks. Bingo!

And so Wednesday afternoon, I registered.

I am officially doing the 2011 Walt Disney World Half Marathon!! January 8, 2011!!!

I’ve got a good foundation going with my fitness. I’ve got the time down for a run/walk pace. It’s all about building endurance and stamina now. But I’m going to be smart and follow the training plan. Even if sometimes it might not feel like a lot on some days or weeks. I’m going to trust the process and trust myself.

I’m going to do this!!!

And this is my record of my journey. My journey for the WDW Half…and eventually, after that, my journey to the Disneyland Half. And beyond that, we’ll see.

I’m inviting you along on this journey! Come with me if you want! It’s gonna be a wild ride I’m sure!!
